HARVEST NOTES

For many winemakers, the 2020 vintage was one that they’d like to forget - as the res that plagued Northern California just before harvest either prevented the picks altogether, or the resulting wines were heavily smoke affected. Luckily, Anderson Valley was untouched by the fires and smoke, and the Maggy Hawk wines from this vintage are quite exceptional. Rainfall during the growing season was low, and yields were smaller as well, resulting in another year of bright and concentrated wines. The Maggy Hawk Pinot Noir blocks were individually hand-harvested in the early morning between September 7th and September 16th.

WINEMAKING

Our 2020 Afleet Pinot Noir is crafted from a unique selection of blocks and clones from all corners of the Maggy Hawk vineyard. Upon arriving at the winery, we separate the individual blocks and allow the grapes to cold soak for 5 days before raising the temperature and beginning fermentation. The fruit is then pressed very gently, and the free run is kept separate from the harder pressing and racked down to barrels. The wine is allowed to go through malolactic fermentation on its own before being left to age in 100% neutral French oak barrels for 17 months. Finished unfined and unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES

Wonderful breadth, depth, and personality in spades. Afleet incorporates four distinct blocks from the vineyard and incorporates 60% whole cluster fermentation to craft a wine with a variety of aromatics. Mandarin, stargazer lily, guava and saffron aromas mingle and develop over time. Stem tannin circles the outer edges on the texture and leaves the mid-palate fresh and juicy.
